  • We saw exponential growth in annual giving campaigns including Founders Day of Giving, PIKE Now, and Giving Tuesday.
  • 2022 marked the introduction of the Pi Kappa Alpha Historical Society to own and preserve our beloved Fraternity's artifacts and rich history.
  • The Foundation has experienced a high-water mark year for awarding grants and scholarships.

In 2022, we doubled down on our mission to raise funds to educate and empower principled leaders. You and many others rose to the occasion to help our undergraduate brothers, and you have continued to do so as we transition back to life on campus and to a Fraternity that can enjoy every event and milestone together once more. Thanks to exceptional donors like you, this past year has seen an astounding amount of excitement and support for numerous initiatives. Here are just a few of our success stories I feel are most impactful:

Most importantly, I want to thank you and all our loyal donors. Your kind donations have lent our great brotherhood strength when we need it most, and above all the ability to empower our undergraduate brothers!

I am grateful for your relentless commitment to Pi Kappa Alpha.

Fraternally,

Dan Berger

President, Board of Trustees

Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation

Successful organizations have many characteristics. The two that come to mind for Pi Kappa Alpha include a purpose-driven mission and strong leaders who carry out that mission. My time as Foundation President has allowed me to work with the very alumni donors who embody these characteristics. These qualities found in our key supporters have helped our brotherhood navigate challenges, both predictable and unexpected.

I’m happy with the progress we’ve achieved over the past two years in the face of a difficult environment. As my term as President comes to an end, I’m excited about our prospects under Kevin Virta’s leadership. As a previous member of the Supreme Council and a corporate executive, he brings a great perspective on the needs of the Fraternity and challenges that the Foundation can help tackle.

DONATE TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

With a matching gift challenge of $40,000 from a generous alumnus, 157 donors stepped up to ensure we attained our goal during Founders Day of Giving. As a result, $95,000 was raised to complete our digital preservation Gold Star Heroes project — ensuring those legacies are available to future generations. We raised enough to support the archivist position and establish an endowment that will perpetually cover the hosting costs for the digital museum.

Based on the response to the 2022 Founders Day of Giving, PIKE extended its fundraising efforts to Convention just a few months later and raised an additional $90,000, of which $25,000 was a matching gift. These funds will benefit a growing list of preservation projects.

THE LEADERSHIP BEHIND THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Thank you to our Historical Society Board and Experts for their good work identifying and prioritizing our most pressing needs.

Mobile History Exhibits

These banners present an opportunity to share PIKE’s rich history with members who may never make it to the Memorial Headquarters to see the museum artifacts firsthand. Specific stories, such as The Founding and Pikes in Politics, are presented on retractable banners that can be shipped to PIKE University meeting locations and events around the country. Subjects of future exhibits include Struggle and Rebirth, Prominent Pike Elbert A. Tuttle, History of Fire Trucks, and other topics. The Mobile History Exhibits will also be available as exhibits on the Digital History Archive.

The Shield & Diamond collage

An artistic installation of 87 of the best Shield & Diamond covers produced to date. The exhibit, unveiled at the Marvin & Nancy Dennis Chapter Executives Conference, was a highlight of the Memorial Headquarters tour held during the Conference. The exhibit will expand to include the next great S&D covers. There is room for growth of the display as more outstanding covers are produced in the future.

FOUNDERS DAY OF GIVING

Founders Day is when PiKA brothers far and wide gather to celebrate the founding of our great brotherhood. It's a time of reunion; to reminisce about the boys we were, and the men we've become. This day also serves as a time of reflection… a visitation to our founding values and how they've transcended time to guide generation after generation of young men.

On March 1st, 2022, the Pi Kappa Alpha Historical Society springboarded its first set of preservation initiatives with our Founders Day of Giving, leveraging this nostalgic day among Pikes everywhere to promote the programs that will help ensure Founders Day will always have a robust history to refer to!

2021: $12,127

2022: $95,895

Our brotherhood has touched the lives of countless men and in turn, Pi Kappa Alpha has been enriched by their stories, molded by their experiences, and the evidence of such is everywhere. In an old photo album at a chapter house… a diary from the late 1800s… today it’s happening on social media when your chapter wins intramural events! Our history is everywhere, and everlasting – it deserves to be cared for and accessible to benefit our members now and in the future.

Fortunately, 170 alumni donors agreed and helped raise over $95,000 in support of the following 3 initiatives:

Two men in library looking at computer screen

ARCHIVIST

Funded the annual cost to employ our dedicated archivist to oversee the various projects and initiatives of the Historical Society.

DIGITAL ARCHIVES

Funded the yearly platform fee to cover the cost of hosting our digital archives.

GOLD STAR HEROES

Funded the complete digitization of the Gold Star Heroes by funding the remaining $49,000 of the $144,000 project. Future funding initiatives include updates to the physical Gold Star Memorial Display at the Memorial Headquarters and adding a digital touchscreen experience so in-person guests can learn more about each Gold Star Hero while viewing the Memorial.

GIVING TUESDAY

Since its inception 10 years ago, Giving Tuesday has one simple goal: a day that encourages people to do good and to inspire generosity around the world. We asked the PIKE network to consider Pi Kappa Alpha for their charitable dollars… they did not disappoint.

In this competition to "do the most good", Pi Kappa Alpha faced off against Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Chi in a battle royale! In true competitive fashion - gifts were limited to a short 14-hour window on Giving Tuesday. In that time, 320 donors raised over $100,000 for Pi Kappa Alpha making 2022 the best Giving Tuesday in our history!

Giving Tuesday was also an opportunity to send kind words to men of PiKA who have influenced their peers. We were thrilled to see tribute cards sent to men who embody leadership, mentorship, and even kind hearts.

Parents sent cards to their son to express love and pride. Alumni sent cards to brothers they haven't seen since college, because of a lasting impression. We also saw many gifts made in memory of those brothers who have entered Chapter Eternal.

Truly an inspiring Giving Tuesday!

Let's Get 'Em to Louisville

The Convention is an amazing experience for any and every Pike. Undergraduates gain the knowledge to lead, inspire others, effectively navigate peer-to-peer interactions, and help steer the course for the future of the Fraternity!

Prior to Louisville, our last Convention was in 2018, and it was clear to the Foundation that getting as many of our youngest and newest members to this incredible event should be a priority. As more and more students communicated financial barriers as their greatest "no factor" for attending, the Foundation decided to do a quick one-time campaign that allowed students to fundraise to cover the costs of registration, lodging, and travel for the 2022 Louisville Convention! Over $20,000 from 142 donors was raised by students through this initiative, dollars that were tax deductible for the donors and beneficial for the students.

DESCRIBE PIKE UNIVERSITY IN ONE WORD

Announcing the Thomas C. Tillar Leadership Academy

History was made July 23, 2022, at the Pi Kappa Alpha International Convention in Louisville when it was announced that the Officers Leadership Academy would permanently be renamed the Thomas C. Tillar Leadership Academy. Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation Trustee Emeritus Thomas C. Tillar Jr. (Virginia Tech, Epsilon ’71) received this distinction for his incredibly generous cumulative contributions of over $2,000,000 to the Foundation for PIKE educational and leadership programs through a combination of donations and a planned estate gift.

Tillar’s Pi Kappa Alpha honors and involvement also include being named the 2013 recipient of the Loyalty Award. He remains on the Epsilon Chapter Alumni Advisory Board as its faculty advisor and as president of its house corporation. Tillar also served as Founders regional president and as a member of the alumni commission. He is a member of the President’s Council and the Rotunda Society for cumulative giving.

Professionally, he is a former vice president for alumni relations at Virginia Tech and later served as special assistant to the Dean of Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business. In 2017, Tillar was presented with the Frank L. Ashmore Award for lifetime career achievement in the advancement profession by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

As the proclamation reads, “Brother Tillar passionately embraces the mission of the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation as a means of repaying the benefits that he gained from the Fraternity, thus ensuring those benefits to future brothers for generations to come. Now, be it proclaimed, that the Pi Kappa Alpha Supreme Council and the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation Board of Trustees express their deepest appreciation to Brother Tillar through the permanent naming of the Thomas C. Tillar Leadership Academy.”

DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS

Delta State Grad Recognized as Most Outstanding Undergraduate

Will Young (Delta State, Zeta Beta ’18) was recognized with the Robertson Most Outstanding Undergraduate Award. The Robertson Award honors Pi Kappa Alpha’s outstanding graduating senior. Pi Kappa Alpha first recognized its outstanding graduating senior in 1926 with an award administered by the alumni chapter of Buffalo, New York. The award’s first recipient was Howard Bell Arbuckle Jr. (Davidson, Beta ’25).

Young graduated in May 2022 with a degree in biology. He served as a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) since his freshman year, serving as a student senator, secretary, vice president, and then president. During his tenure in SGA, he developed and launched a variety of initiatives around campus which included a Delta State webpage to provide easy access to SGA information for students and a new game room for students. Young implemented the inaugural Big Green Event, a one-day, student-led community service event that undertook more than 20 service projects on campus and in the Cleveland, Mississippi community. As SGA President, Young was instrumental in the campaign to create an outdoor student recreation facility. His contributions to the effort were so instrumental that Delta State administrators opted to name the facility the William H. Young Student Outdoor Recreation Area in his honor.

Young had the privilege of serving under Past Delta State University President William LaForge (Delta State, Zeta Beta ’69) as a member of his cabinet, where Young helped keep the focus of the university on the students. Delta State Vice President for Student Affairs H. Edward Lovin, Jr. stated, “In my over twenty years of working in higher education, I cannot recall a more student-centered SGA president who has accomplished so much in their time of leadership and governance.”

Fraternally, Young served the Zeta Beta Chapter as philanthropy chair, social media chair, vice president for membership development, treasurer, and president. As philanthropy chair, he challenged the chapter to exceed expectations as they raised $20,000 in five days for a fellow Delta State student who faced critical medical challenges. In addition to being named the 2022 Robertson Most Outstanding Undergraduate, Young was recognized as the IFC Greek Man of the Year, Top Student Organization President in 2021, has been tapped for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, and the Delta State University Student Hall of Fame. He is currently preparing to begin medical school.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation is proud to honor Will Young as the 2022 Robertson Most Outstanding Undergraduate.

Groves has served the Fraternity in numerous capacities, starting as chapter treasurer and president while an undergraduate. He then served on the Fraternity’s professional staff as a resident counselor, chapter consultant, director of expansion, director of chapter services, and executive director. As a volunteer, he’s served at the local level as past president of the Delta Upsilon House Corporation and as a past chapter advisor for Beta Kappa (Emory). At the International level, he’s served on the board of the Risk Awareness Foundation and was on the Supreme Council for 10 years as Legal Counsel, Vice President, and International President. Brother Gooden resides in Jacksonville, FL with his wife Corkie.

DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Doug Ducey (ARIZONA STATE, DELTA TAU ’82)

As an undergraduate, Brother Ducey served Delta Tau Chapter as president, treasurer, recruitment chairman, and new member educator. In 2012, he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation’s prestigious Order of West Range.

Governor Doug Ducey was elected as Arizona’s 23rd governor in 2014 and re-elected in 2018 with more votes than anyone in state history. Upon election, Arizona had a $1 billion deficit and a sluggish economy. Today, Arizona has a record surplus, a balanced budget and a booming economy. Governor Ducey has eliminated overburdensome regulations, fostered the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs, and reformed taxes every year he’s been in office—including signing the largest income tax cut in state history.

Throughout his administration, Governor Ducey has prioritized education. Since he took office, Arizona has invested over $8 billion into K-12 education and brought per-pupil funding to a record high. He has also positioned Arizona as a national leader in school choice and civics education. Even with record investments and historic tax cuts, Governor Ducey has found a way to ensure Arizona’s insulated from future downturns, adding $1 billion to the state’s Rainy Day Fund.

Prior to his terms as governor, Ducey served as the 32nd state treasurer of Arizona, overseeing over $12 billion in state assets and served as an investment manager for local governments as the state’s chief banker and investment officer. As the treasurer, he also served as the chairman of Arizona State’s Board of Investment; as the State’s surveyor general; on the State’s Land Selection Board; and on the State Loan Commission. In addition, he served as the president of the Western State Treasurers’ Association and as the western region vice president for the National Association of State Treasurers.

Governor Ducey is a former businessman and CEO of Cold Stone Creamery who today also serves as co-Chairman of the Republican Governors Association. He has three sons, has been married to his wife Angela almost 32 years, and they reside in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

GAMMA PHI CHAPTER RECEIVES MULTIPURPOSE FUND

Joseph W. "Chip" Seidle (Wake Forest, Gamma Phi ’68) has remained a loyal and dedicated PiKA since his initiation. Throughout the years, Chip has served as president of the Gamma Phi Alumni Association, chapter advisor, and as an attendee at numerous training opportunities. PIKE University leadership summits and volunteer trainings are just two examples of PIKE programming that provided a strong foundation for his role as a student mentor and alumni volunteer. In recognition of Chip’s dedication, he was recognized as the International Fraternity’s Chapter Advisor of the Year in 2012.

Today, Chip’s passion and service continue through an investment made in his chapter’s future. The Seidle Family has established The Joseph "Chip" W. Seidle Family Gamma Phi Legacy Fund as a testament to his role as a mentor to countless Gamma Phi student leaders. This multipurpose fund ensures Gamma Phi chapter members have access to the same resources that have inspired Chip in his own journey as a family man, community leader, and PiKA mentor.

Below are just a few of the opportunities Gamma Phi chapter leaders can access through this fund:

  • Regional or international PIKE University events
  • Merit-based or academic tuition scholarships
  • Educational equipment and technology
  • Local educational programming for the chapter and/or Wake Forest campus community

SCHOLARSHIP FEATURES

The benefit of this multipurpose fund means Gamma Phi has the flexibility to deploy the grants where they are needed most; the chapter can identify areas they want to improve and act based on local needs. We are excited to see how the brothers of Gamma Phi will utilize this unique gift in the years to come.

Thank you to the Seidle Family for creating this fund for the future leaders of Gamma Phi.

1. Drive Impact on the Individual

PIKE will develop the best version of our undergraduates through personal and professional development, by investing in first-class educational and experiential learning, programming, and technology.

The Fraternity has invested in a first-class Learning Management System (LMS) from Adobe to digitize the True PIKE Experience (TPE) four-year member development program that focuses on personal and professional development as well as best practices in chapter operations.

2. Build a Lifelong Fraternal Experience

Forever

PIKE will foster lifelong friendships on a firmer and more lasting basis while building opportunities for mentoring, career networking, and relevance through the various ages and stages of life. In addition, PIKE will preserve and protect our rich history and exemplify our founding core values.

Our student members are in need of positive male role models to provide support and guidance. The Fraternity launched its first mentoring month to grow support at the local level and offered nationwide virtual speakers on topics including Engineering, Accounting, Real Estate, and Law.

The formation of the Pi Kappa Alpha Historical Society preserves and protects our historical documents and archives. Numerous projects completed in 2022 include Mobile History Exhibits of The Founding and Pikes in Politics, Oral History Interviews of past International Officers, Updating the Chapter Historian Handbook, Building a Shield & Diamond magazine cover art project at MHQ, beginning preservation work on the Alpha Chapter Minute Book, and completing the digitization of the Gold Star Heroes.

3. Recommit to Health and Safety

PIKE will provide education, resources and programs to develop a holistic approach to address the various issues (mental health, substance abuse, hazing, sexual assault, etc.) facing fraternities and society at large.

The Fraternity is focused on creating a culture of health and safety in our chapters and has invested in an e-learning educational journey to provide our members with consistent education on various health and safety topics (mental health, substance abuse, hazing, sexual assault, etc.)

with content relevant to our members at each year throughout college.

The Fraternity has made addressing the stigma of mental health and providing support to our members a key initiative. Projects have included: endowing PIKE Lifeline through the JED Foundation which provides our members and their communities with free and confidential mental health resources and 24-hour support. Also, to help our members be a better brother's keeper, the Fraternity has created a Mental Health Chairman Handbook and training materials.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

4. Demonstrate & Promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Inclusion Icon. Equity Culture Sign.

PIKE will intentionally extend our high standards of membership recruitment to welcome a diverse group of men who commit to our noble ideals while educating and preparing our members for a more diverse world. We seek to create an environment where all members have a strong sense of belonging and our guests and community feel welcome.

The Fraternity has partnered with the Harbor Institute to conduct a five-step engagement which includes an intensive audit of our resources, programs, and policies to develop a holistic DEI strategy for the International Fraternity and our local chapters. Presentations at PIKE University prepare our members for a diverse world and equip them with the skills to engage in difficult conversations. Also, a partnership with Men Advocating Real Change (MARC) began with an executive retreat consisting of staff, volunteers, and student leaders to ensure organizational culture starts with a top-down approach.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

5. Achieve Operational Excellence

Filled In Excellence Icon

PIKE will create a consistent member experience across the Fraternity so that men who are committed to pursuing our high ideals have the proper infrastructure and support system in place. We will set the standard for what a fraternity can be by constantly improving the effectiveness of our chapters and core operations.

We are at the intersection of fraternal operations and technology. The Fraternity is implementing a new technological infrastructure that will modernize the Fraternity and streamline operations. The implementation of an improved nationwide chapter billing system will save our chapters collectively over $500,000 per year. INTRODUCING THE PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL CONNECTION

The President's Council Connection was introduced in the Spring of 2022. It is a tri-annual communication plan with pertinent updates, insider details, event information, and more. This communication connects to an exclusive President's Council website that expands on all the topics above and is available all year round. Additionally, in December 2022, we launched our President's Council Premium Gifts! As a token of our appreciation, all new and renewing President's Council members will have the opportunity to pick out a small gift. These items include a mug, tumbler, golf balls, and our throwback President's Council Hat!

We are extremely proud to share that in 2022 our President's Council memberships reached an all-time high of 504 members, surpassing our goal of 500! Please accept our sincere gratitude to all those who joined and renewed. In honor of this amazing accomplishment, we want to feature two of our President's Council members: among our longest current members Robbie De Rojas (Georgia Southern, Iota Upsilon '93), and one of our newest members of 2022, Greg Middleton (Winthrop, Theta Sigma '08)!

"Being a member of Pi Kappa Alpha has helped me achieve my professional goals. Through the Fraternity, I have established a strong network with several brothers I still work with. This network has been instrumental in providing connections and resources that have helped me succeed in owning several real estate and operating companies, including a physician's practice and the largest craft brewery in South Carolina. The leadership and service values that PIKE instills in its members have been invaluable in my business ventures. Being a part of this Fraternity has not only provided me with a support system but also valuable skills that have helped me succeed in my professional life."

"Pi Kappa Alpha has given me so many blessings and opportunities to enrich lives including my own family for nearly three decades. This includes my President's Council Membership. As such, it is important for me and future generations to pay it forward. Contributing to our long-lasting legacy and building future PIKE leaders will positively impact and improve schools, communities, and families. My ongoing journey with the Iota Upsilon Chapter and the President's Council will remain a powerful and important aspect of who I am for LIFE!

PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL

For nearly 20 years, the President's Council has been Pi Kappa Alpha's most prestigious annual giving society. Composed of our most loyal and generous donors, this program is responsible for continuing to ensure the Foundation is able to address the greatest needs of our undergraduate members and the PIKE experience for all members! In 2022, the Foundation had two goals for our President's Council members. First and foremost, we felt our members deserved a personal touch as part of their experience. Second, we aimed to grow our President's Council members to 500.

FINANCIALS

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

The Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation is pleased to report a very successful 2022 fiscal year! Coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic and its corresponding impact on the economy posed challenges, but from a fundraising perspective, 2022 was historic for Pi Kappa Alpha.

Firstly, the PIKE Foundation raised a total of $1.525M in unrestricted dollars, a new record! Initiatives such as Pike Loyal Order, advance campaign gifts, unrestricted bequests, estate gifts, the President’s Council, and the 1868 Club. Thank you to the donors who supported these programs.

Secondly, the aforementioned President’s Council reached an all-time high of 504 members. This is a net increase of 56 members since the close of 2021. These loyal donors give $1000 annually in support of Pi Kappa Alpha. As a small show of appreciation, new and renewing members will receive their choice of a premium gift - including a hat, coffee mug, or tumbler. Thank you to all President’s Council members.

Other successes include PIKE Now’s month of giving which raised $400k compared to $250k in 2021, Giving Tuesday which raised $100k compared to a mere $15k in 2021, and Founders Day of Giving which raised $95k compared to $12K in 2021. Again, thank you to all donors that supported these initiatives.

Most importantly, the PIKE Foundation granted $1.2M in scholarships and grants to our members and programs, almost double the $622k from the previous year. Rest assured that dollars granted back are earned, necessary, and impactful.

As a result of the above successes, 2022 was the PIKE Foundation’s fourth-best staff fundraising year ever at $2.6M raised. The year falls behind only 2021 and 2019 when major estate gifts were realized, and 2012, the first year of the Campaign for Pike University, the Fraternity’s last major capital campaign.

In conclusion, these numbers don’t just happen.

Thank you to the Foundation Board of Trustees, the Supreme Council, and all international officers for their leadership and support.

Thank you also to the amazing Foundation team for their expertise, effort, and dedication.

Thank you all for a great 2022, and on we go to an even greater 2023!

In the bonds of phi phi kappa alpha,

Kevin recently retired as a partner from Premium Retail Services when he and his brother Brian (Creighton, Theta Lambda ’86) sold the company that was originally founded by their father, Ron, in 1985. Kevin helped build Premium into a nationwide marketing company that employs 14,000 people in the United States and Canada. Premium has 200 customers including Google, Samsung, Walmart, and Best Buy, and during its history has generated over $ 1 billion in revenue. Kevin and his wife, Keely, live in St. Louis, Missouri and have four children – Madelyn, Connor, Charlie, and Maeley.

Kirby is one of two founding partners for Houston-based Sage Refined Products, an energy industry leader in oil, natural gas, and power. In his time at Sage, the company grew from six to 60 employees and from $5 million to $35 million in revenue. Foundation for Fraternal Excellence Honors PIKE Foundation with Two Awards of Distinction

The Foundation for Fraternity Excellence (FFE) is the trade association for 100-plus fraternity and sorority foundations. At their recent Annual Conference the PIKE Foundation was awarded with two (out of only nine total) awards for best programming; winning the Best Communications Effort and Best New Development Idea.

Best Communications Effort awarded for 2021 Annual Report

"With a focus on content related to how the Foundation makes an impact – compared to a more traditional annual report largely featuring donor listings – this year, the PIKE Foundation flipped the script for their Annual Report. While still offering a printed piece and PDF, the report was also reimagined into a digital format available on their website. Through integrating QR codes and other indicators in the print version, readers were directed to their website where they were able to watch videos, explore PIKE digital archives, and “meet the CEO." All of the web content was easily accessible and directly embedded on the webpage to keep visitors engaged. And with a digital version easily accessible, they were able to keep donation options front and center."

VIEW 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

Best New Development Idea awarded for the formation of the Pi Kappa Alpha Historical Society and Founders Day of Giving

"This year PIKE created a new business entity, the Historical Society. The Historical Society is a single-member LLC under the Foundation’s 501(c)3 umbrella that owns all historical artifacts and records. Partnering with HistoryIT to begin digitizing their entire collection, their most recent Founder’s Day of Giving was used to officially launch the new entity with fundraising efforts specifically benefitting the society. Messaging was tailored to focus on three specific needs: Gold Star Heroes, Digital Archives, and their Archivist. These areas resonated with donors and led to a $40,000 matching challenge and resulted in more than $95,000 raised – a 790% increase over the previous year’s giving day."

Your donations makes all the difference in helping us fulfill Pi Kappa Alpha’s obligation to our undergraduate members and maintain our presence as the preeminent fraternity in North America.
